About

Robert Cooper, the founder and artisan of Irenic Wood Creations.

A question often asked is, why the business name Irenic? When looking for a name that would represent my personal experience and aspirations, I struggled to find a word that was unique.

A major motor vehicle accident, cumulative stressors from military deployments and operations took a mental health toll. With help from my family, good friends, and medical professionals, I began my healing journey. I happened upon the Greek word Irenic which has slightly changed its meaning over generations, but the original Greek meaning is the intent to find peace, moderation, and conciliation. This word fit my situation perfectly. I am now on my Irenic journey.

Much to my family’s surprise (and delight) a wood lathe became a catalyst that woke a latent inner Artisan. Whilst teaching myself how to use a lathe, I recognized the positive effects of wood turning that brought a sense of peace, accomplishment, and ignited a passion to create. Perhaps because we have so much wood in Canada, there is a tendency to discard wood that is blemished or broken in some manner and considered of no use. I believe that wood is a metaphor for healing and sense of purpose

Life, on its own has many challenges, some that may incur mental and/or physical injuries. These injuries can usually heal or can be mitigated, but can leave hidden and/or physical scars. Wood represents a perfect illustrative example of that.

Rather than using kiln dried, “perfect” wood, Roberts intent is to use, as much as possible, flawed wood that has been hand harvested from local fallen or discarded trees. Wood flaws are a central component to Irenics wood craft. Using primarily flawed and local wood is a source of pride for Irenic Wood Creations.

Irenic wood crafts symbolize that the scars of life, like the scars in wood are a testament to our resolve and that we, and our wood crafts, remain functional and of value. "Our creations are suitable for anyone and will last a lifetime, I strive to make each piece as special as the person who will own it."

Robert’s formative years were spent on a dairy farm south of Ottawa, ON. Following high-school, Robert joined the Canadian Armed Forces looking for adventure. Whether deployed on operations, transferred overseas, or training in Canada he found plenty of adventures.

Later, worked as a federal public servant and spent six years with the U.N. International Criminal tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands.

Robert and his wife enjoy summer time in a quaint village in rural Newfoundland, where he hones his woodturning skills. The natural scenery, sounds, and people of this amazing Island province serve as a constant source of inspiration for his craft.

"I believe that every piece of wood has a story to tell, and I am honoured to be able to share those stories through my Irenic journey."
